Following our afternoon exploring a tiny bit of Brooklyn, we spent our final day in New York City in Manhattan.
Mr. Chuckles was craving the chicken and waffles that we had the last time we were in the city, so we made the trip uptown to Amy Ruth’s in Harlem. Established in 1998, this restaurant is well frequented by locals and has become tourist famous from its feature in Lonely Planet guidebooks. The menu includes a wide selection of home style soul food; we both ordered the “Reverend Al Sharpton” chicken and waffles, and a side of cheese grits.
Unfortunately I don’t think we can give this place a strong recommendation as the meal was nothing to write home about and seemed blander than we remembered. The cheese grits were tasty, though. Teddy also became a wild man during this meal, so it was a bit stressful trying to wolf down our food while wrangling him.
We survived the meal and scurried out to get on the subway back downtown. We decided to disembark at midtown to make a visit to Times Square for the heck of it, and got some good family photos of the three of us.
For dinner, we wrapped up our NYC pizza tour by going full circle and returning to Joe’s Pizza on Carmine. With the second taste, I was able to make my final adjudication that Joe’s was my favourite New York slice.
We ended our day with a quick stroll through Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park.
The next morning, we were picked up by Legends Limousine for our ride to Newark airport. We had no issues at airport security and it was actually even easier than our departure from Toronto since we had TSA PreCheck. Teddy again did well, falling asleep right after we took off and napping for the entire flight.
We have learned a lot from our short first trip as a family and I’m so glad that all went smoothly. Our next adventure will be in a couple months when we go out west to San Francisco. Stay tuned!
