A day in New York Chinatown and across the Brooklyn Bridge

For our second day in New York City, we explored more of Lower Manhattan and beyond. We started the morning with a subway ride to Chinatown.

We stopped at the popular Nom Wah Tea Parlor for their delicious dim sum.

Opened in 1920, the Doyers Street location of Nom Wah was NYC’s first dim sum restaurant. We ordered a hefty selection of dishes and especially liked the scallion pancakes. Again, Teddy slept through our entire meal comfortably in his stroller.

Mr. Chuckles’ swollen toe had been aggravating him throughout the trip, but fortunately he was able to muster up the strength to continue with our planned itinerary.

Our next excursion was a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. We had walked the bridge during our last trip to NYC, but only made it about half way. This time, we went all the way across into Brooklyn to explore Dumbo.

Short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, Dumbo is a neighbourhood in Brooklyn encompassing two sections — one between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, and another that continues east from Manhattan Bridge to the Vinegar Hill area. Historically, the area was a ferry landing characterized by industrial and warehouse buildings. In the late 20th century, numerous buildings were purchased by a developer and the area was remade into an upscale residential and commercial community known for its art galleries and as a centre for tech startups.

The popular tourist destination here is along Washington Street for the iconic Manhattan Bridge view. As you can see, it was incredibly crowded with long weekend tourists who all had the same idea as we did.

Next, we walked toward the waterfront to Brooklyn Bridge Park for a short stroll and views of Manhattan from across the East River.

Ready for a break, we hopped on the subway for the trip back to Manhattan and relaxed at the hotel before dinner. Our third pizza tour stop this evening was L’Industrie Pizza. The original location of this place is actually in Brooklyn but they recently opened an outpost in West Village.

It was conveniently located a couple doors down from Milk Bar, so we stopped there afterward for dessert.

On the way back to the hotel, we made a detour to see the Friends apartment. The last time we’d been here it was dark, so I finally got my coveted daytime photo of the building. I’ll be there for you

That was a cap on our second day in the Big Apple. One more day of adventures to come.

  3. We saw the Seinfeld coffee shop, but I didn’t know you could see the Friends building! You’re giving me another reason to return to NYC! (By the way, yesterday I talked myself out of a visit to the NY-style pizza place – we’re just back from Portugal so I need to scale back my indulgences for a bit – but I will get there soon.) 🙂
