Walking around San Sebastián: Gros, Monte Igueldo, Paseo Nuevo

We wrapped up our time in Basque Country with a couple more days of exploration around San Sebastián.

A walk around Gros

After another breakfast of chocolate churros, we decided to get some laundry done since we were at the mid-point of our trip and I was running out of clean underwear. We found a small coin laundry in Old Town where we got a load washed and chatted with a couple American tourists who we would later run into again on our flight to Paris. Small world!

Satisfied with our clean clothes, we dropped them off at the hotel and then went out for a walk in the neighbourhood of Gros, in the eastern part of town.

The most notable landmark here is Zurriola Beach, where surfers come to ride big waves all year round.

We were lazy again for the remainder of the day, opting to just stick around Old Town and eat pintxos. In the evening, we stopped by La Viña for their famed Basque burnt cheesecake. This place was featured in the New York Times as “Flavor of the Year” in 2021 and their cheesecake definitely lived up to the hype.

Old Town and beach views

The next day, we finally got some sunshine after the rainy start to our time in San Sebastián. We started off with another breakfast of chocolate churros and an early morning stroll through Old Town for some unobstructed photos of the street views.

Then we took advantage of the nice weather with a walk down the waterfront again, passing by Playa de la Concha and Playa de Ondaretta.

Going up Monte Igueldo

Just past Ondaretta beach was the Monte Igueldo funicular. For 4,25 euros we purchased a ride up the tram car to the top of the mountain.

The summit features amazing views overlooking the coast, as well as a couple cafes and a small amusement park.

More pintxos and a walk on Paseo Nuevo

We spent our final afternoon in San Sebastián back in Old Town, eating more pintxos yet again. For lunch, we returned to a stop from our food tour and tried the tortilla (potato omelette) at Sidreria Biharri. This restaurant is also known for its cider house menu, but unfortunately we never got to try this given my alcohol-free dietary restrictions.

After lunch, we took a walk along the Paseo Nuevo promenade which wraps around Mount Urgull. It takes about 40 minutes to complete the loop and offers views of giant crashing waves along the seawall.

This was the end of our time in Spain and the next day we would depart onward to Paris. More on that coming up soon.

  1. I so admire your energy for doing all of this in your “condition”! Not only will your baby have wanderlust but also a very refined palate! I love those picturesque streets and the history. But most I think I love that beach. I could sit for hours watching the waves rushing in. Always enjoy travelling with you.

  2. Sounds like a lot of walking and exploring in San Sebastian! Basque burnt cheesecake looks yummy, and I think the Japanese pulled inspiration from it to make their version of the Basque cheesecake (especially with the Uncle Tetsu brand– very delicious!). I didn’t take the funicular up to Monte Igueldo and instead walked up to the top…regardless of how one gets there, the views are stunning! Glad you had a fun time in San Sebastian and looking forward to seeing your adventures in Paris!

    1. I loved how walkable San Sebastián was. The Basque burnt cheesecake was amazing; I can see the resemblance between that and Japanese cheesecake (we have Uncle Tetsu in Toronto too).

    1. Perfect opportunity for photos! Otherwise it was quite crowded on those narrow streets later in the day.
