European spring holiday: Spain, France, England

Wow — long time no blog, folks! I haven’t been around on WordPress since December 2022 but I’m back now with a travel update. For our spring vacation, Mr. Chuckles and I will be heading off to Europe. More specifically, we are spending a couple weeks in Barcelona, San Sebastián, Paris, and London!

I will continue with my new routine of posting trip updates once we return, so the next time you’ll hear from me is probably at the end of April.

So far, this is what our itinerary looks like:

Day 1

Arrival in Barcelona, Spain. We will be staying in the Gothic Quarter and plan to take it easy on our first day, possibly with a visit to Casa Batlló and La Sagrada Familia.

Day 2

Tastes & Traditions of Barcelona food tour in the morning. Afternoon at the Picasso Museum.

Day 3

Park Guell and Mount Tibidabo.

Day 4

Flight to Bilbao and then transfer to San Sebastián, Spain. Explore Old Town. Evening pintxos food tour.

Day 5

Explore the sights in San Sebastián including Miramar Royal Palace and Mont Igueldo, and eat lots.

Day 6

Take a walk along Paseo Nuevo and check out Castillo de la Mota castle.

Day 7

Day trip to Pamplona.

Day 8

Flight to Paris, France. Evening food tour in Le Marais. Go up the Eiffel Tower at night (the only time I could find tickets!).

Day 9

Seine River cruise in the morning. Explore Montmartre in the afternoon. Evening at Moulin Rouge.

Day 10

Day trip to Versailles.

Day 11

Day trip to Giverny to visit Monet’s House.

Day 12

Musee de Louvre in the morning. Late afternoon Eurostar train to London, England.

Day 13

We tried to procure tickets to an Arsenal match but were unsuccessful. This will probably be a free day wandering around London to see a few places we missed on our last trip. The only thing we have planned for certain is a meal at Dishoom.

Day 14

Return to Toronto.

Hopefully we will not face too many major inconveniences with the protests and strikes happening in Paris, but the trip is going ahead either way. I’ve tried not to over schedule this one so we have lots of time to relax and modify our plans ad hoc. I’d love to hear your suggestions on anything to add to the itinerary!

As for travel plans for the remainder of 2023, we will be going to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake in May. Following this, it will be a homebody final half of the year as we will be preparing to welcome a little person 👶 into our family in September! Travel will look different for us in 2024 but I am committed to passing on my wanderlust so we will definitely be getting back out there once we are a bit more settled.

  3. Attractive programme! Things are getting better in France, but with the French you never know. There is also a Picasso museum in the Marais with a new display, somewhat complementary to the one in Barcelona. All the best for the little person coming!

    1. Yes, protests are a part of French life but I am optimistic that it won’t interfere too much with our travels. Looking forward to exploring Paris! Thank you for the well wishes 🙂

  4. Oh my gosh, Jess! Congratulations on your pregnancy! How exciting. I love it when parents intentionally introduce a love of travel in their young children. If your kiddo is anything like you, she/he will probably exit with womb and say, “That was a fun trip. Where to next?”
Your travels sound marvelous, too. Look forward to reading about them. We spent Christmas in Death Valley and a week in Jamaica earlier this month. This summer it’s France and Andorra. Nor sure if we’re doing Charleston, SC, this fall or next fall, but this summer I’ll be starting to book and plan for Australia for summer of 2024. Just telling you now in a mini-comment/post since you won’t be on the blogosphere much. 🙂
    Safe travels and safe pregnancy!

    1. I don’t want to put too much pressure on the kid but I hope we can raise him with a sense of adventure and willingness to try new foods! Your travel plans sound amazing – I’m sure I will be living vicariously through your blog in between diapers and feeds. 🙂

  7. I just came back from a trip to England and France. For Paris/France, I would be careful not to overschedule or book anything in advance due to strikes, especially if you’re trying for day trips to Versailles and Giverny. You might need to move around the days of what you plan to do (for instance, visit Versailles on another day, Giverny on the other day…), since the strikes can severely impact the trains and how much time you can visit the destinations. Definitely check the day before online to see if there are any major strikes happening the following day. I got lucky during my time in Paris: despite being there for one major strike day, I was still able to see all I’d wanted to see, in Paris and outside of it! Have lots of fun!

    1. Thanks Rebecca! I have purchased tickets for Versailles but not Monet House. I wonder if they would allow me to exchange my Versailles tickets in case of train strike?

      1. I would check the terms of the tickets: is it only for a specific day, or is it flexible for up to a certain period of time (e.g. a week, a month)?

  8. Congrats on your pregnancy Jess 🙂 And this sounds like an amazing trip, though that Arsenal game seems like it’s determined to elude you!

    1. Thank you Hannah! I think we have given up on making it to an Arsenal match in the near future, especially when they are doing so well. Maybe we will try again in a few years 😉
