Planning a stopover in Iceland

Now that I have a pretty extensive itinerary planned for our visit to London, I am focusing on the Iceland portion of our trip in September. We booked our flights with Icelandair through their Stopover in Iceland program which offers a stopover flight to Iceland at no additional fare. Following six days in London, we will fly over to Reykjavik for our quick visit to Iceland spanning four days.

Iceland is undoubtedly a country that warrants its own extended visit, but we are short on vacation time and trying to work within a budget, so this trip is intended to just give us a brief glimpse of the country. We are still hoping to check a few things off our bucket list.

1. Explore Reykjavik city centre.
Source

We will be landing in Reykjavik in mid-afternoon, so are planning to spend some time exploring the city on our first day. A few sites that I have on my to-see list include Hallgrímskirkja Church and the Sun Voyager statue. We can also browse shops on Laugavegur Street and check out one of the many interesting museums in the city centre. If we have an appetite, I’d like to try an Icelandic hot dog at Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur.

2. Chase the Northern Lights.
Source

For our first evening in Reykjavik, we have booked a Northern Lights minibus tour with Arctic Adventures. The Aurora can apparently be seen in Iceland between September and April, so hopefully we will be there on a clear night to get a view.

3. Tour the Golden Circle.
Source

Our first full day in Iceland will be spent on another Arctic Adventures tour to the Golden Circle. This is Iceland’s most famous scenic route that will take us through Gullfoss waterfall, Strokkur geyser, and Thingvellir National Park — another UNESCO world heritage site I can add to my checklist.

4. Dip in the Secret Lagoon.
Source

Known locally as Gamla Laugin, the Secret Lagoon is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. It was constructed in 1891 at Hverahólmi, a geothermal area near Flúðir. I’m looking forward to having a relaxing dip here to cap off our visit to the Golden Circle.

5. See the sights on the South Shore.
Source

We will go on our last day tour with Arctic Adventures to the South Shore. I was debating between this tour versus a trip to Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and ended up opting for this one since it is a bit closer to Reykjavik. The tour will take us to several notable sites including Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, Skógafoss Waterfall, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, and the village of Vík.

6. Relax at the Blue Lagoon.
Source

Prior to our flight back to Toronto, we have booked a morning at the Blue Lagoon. This large geothermal spa is located in a lava field near Grindavík and in front of Mount Þorbjörn on Reykjanes Peninsula. It is actually manmade, supplied by water used in the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power station. It’s a top attraction in Iceland and I’m excited to have some spa time to get me nice and relaxed for our long trip home.

7. Taste Icelandic cuisine.
Source

I couldn’t leave Iceland without satisfying my foodie needs with a proper exploration of the local cuisine. Referring to this article on Eater, I’ve planned for us to have dinner at Þrir Frakkar which serves Icelandic style seafood, and at Michelin starred Matur og Drykkur for the tasting menu of modernized classic Icelandic dishes.

As always, I look forward to your thoughts and recommendations for our stopover in Iceland!

  1. Iceland seems to have become quite popular. I would love to have seen it, for the Natural uniqueness but also for the culture. It’s sort of one of a kind, I would think. Look forward to reading your impressions.

    1. Yes it was becoming a very popular tourist destination even pre-pandemic. I’m happy to finally have my chance to go!

  3. Exciting plans! How did you find the price point was for these bus tours? We would love to visit Iceland someday, but we don’t know if driving around the island independently would be something for us (in case we break down somewhere). These tours sound like a great solution! Do let us know if you think it was worth it and how your experience was.

    1. I think it would definitely be more cost efficient to do a self-drive tour but this is not an option for me considering that I hate driving even in the city at home, never mind in potentially challenging weather conditions in Iceland. The tours we chose ranged from $95-140 CAD (about $100 USD) per person so definitely not cheap.

  4. It’s a well-prepared trip! My best memories are of endless, lunar landscapes in sleepless July days, looking for waterfalls that are the antithesis of Niagara.

    1. I like that description – the antithesis of Niagara!

  5. Hi Jess, definitely try the Icelandic hotdogs… Super yummie 🤪. Maybe you could also visit the vulcano that is currently active (from a safe distance). We visited the other one last year, but it was not that active anymore however, still impressive though! When doing the tour of the Golden Circle, we stopped to have lunch at Friðheimar (tomato farm), note that reservations are needed.
Good luck with the trip ! I am sure you will have a great time in Iceland !

    1. Thanks for the suggestions! It would be very cool to see that active volcano. I don’t know if we will be able to fit it in but I’ll keep the restaurant in mind for our golden circle tour!

  7. Sounds like you’re getting to see some really great stuff. I hope you get to see the Northern Lights! We really should take advantage of this stopover program one of these days. Flying to Iceland is takes about the same time as a flight to Jamaica for us, I think.

    1. It’s a 5.5 hour flight from Toronto to Reykjavik so probably not much longer for you. You should definitely consider it!

      1. Oh, then it’s probably 6 hours for us. Still, totally doable. I wish Hawaii had a similar program for North Americans heading to Australia/NZ. Even though it doesn’t, we’ll probably stop over there if/when we get down to Oceania. Gotta break up that interminable flight somehow!

      2. I would probably do a layover in Vancouver if I ever make it to Australia/NZ. It’s still a 15 hour flight from Vancouver though, brutal.

  8. Sounds like a solid plan for Iceland! I’d also add to go to the top of the Hallgrímskirkja Church for incredible views of the city from above (looks like a cute toy town!). I’d also recommend adding fried onion bits to your Icelandic hot dog, as it’s a HUGE game changer. And regarding Icelandic cuisine, definitely try their lamb and skip the fermented shark!

    1. Thanks for the tips! The fermented shark doesn’t seem very appealing to me so I will probably skip that as you’ve suggested.

  11. Two of my favorite places in Reykjavik are Reykjavik Roasters for coffee/hot chocolate and pastries and Grillmarkadurinn for dinner! Also, if you’re like me and get hungry/snacky during the day, definitely bring snacks with you! Sometimes the drives between places are really long without many places to stop.

    1. Thanks for the suggestions, I’m going to look up those places for sure! And I will definitely need to pack some snacks on those long tour days… don’t want someone to get hangry.

  12. I went last summer; you’re going to have an amazing time! We didn’t do the entire Golden Circle (we stopped at Vik). Are you going to do any glacier hiking?

    1. No glacier hiking for me, just easy sightseeing but I’m still plenty excited!

  13. If you have time to stop for lunch or dinner during your south coast explorations, I would suggest trying the local lobster at Fjörubordid Restaurant in RWQR+2CH Stokkseyri, Iceland. Best meal we had during a two week ring road trip to Iceland.

    1. Thanks for the recommendation! I suspect we won’t have much time for a long stopover since we are on a tour, but hopefully we will be able to have a decent lunch break.

  14. thanks for sharing. Iceland is a unique, brilliant place and its great to hear you can see the northern lights for so much of the year, i always presumed it was just in the middle of winter, so i will definitely keep this in mind as one day, not soon but one day, i want to get back to Iceland! Looks like you’ll have a great time too!
