Discovering the Mekong Delta

We capped off our time in Ho Chi Minh City on a day trip to the Mekong Delta. This is the region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River empties into the sea via a network of distributaries. On our tour with Urban Adventures, we travelled to My Tho, a former naval base turned port city and the final destination of the mighty Mekong.

Our day was filled with several fun activities allowing us to explore life in the region. Upon arrival in My Tho after a 2 hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, we started with a private boat cruise taking us to an island to tour tropical gardens and taste some tropical fruit.

Then we hopped back on our boat, heading toward another island to visit a bee farm and coconut candy factory.

At lunchtime, we transferred to a sampan row boat taking us through the smaller canals of the Delta.

We were served an incredible lunch featuring traditional Vietnamese dishes with a Mekong Delta twist, mostly seafood.

We saw some cute dogs, too.

We wrapped up with a bumpy ride on a xe loi motorized cart, as we headed back to the boat for our return trip to Ho Chi Minh City.

Goodnight, Ho Chi Minh City

We arrived in the city in the early evening and relaxed on our last night here. We could not depart before grabbing one more banh mi, this time at Huynh Hoa, a very popular little shop that has been rated the best banh mi in Ho Chi Minh.

Oh man, were the reviews spot on – this banh mi was so good! The one we had yesterday was amazing but this took it to another level. Thick cut meat, silky pâté, beautiful baguette…every bite was better than the last. I don’t think I will be able to have a banh mi anywhere else again.

We have really enjoyed our brief time in Ho Chi Minh City, more than I expected. The food was great and we actually found the intense bustle of the city to be really exciting. We are now moving onto a slower pace for a few days and will be writing to you next from central Vietnam – Hoi An, here we come!
