Wrapping up in Scotland: Edinburgh Castle

We returned to Edinburgh from our tour of the Highlands and checked back in at Wilde Aparthotels Grassmarket. We had one final day in Edinburgh before wrapping up our visit to the United Kingdom, which we spent on a visit to Edinburgh Castle.

This historic castle stands on Castle Rock, which has been occupied by humans since at least the Iron Age. Edinburgh Castle has played a prominent role in Scottish history, serving variously as a royal residence, an arsenal, a treasury, a national archive, a mint, a prison, a military fortress, and home of the Honours of Scotland – the Scottish regalia.

We purchased our admission tickets in advance as they can sell out, especially during the busy August festival season. We booked our timed entry for mid-morning and spent a couple hours exploring around. It was a rainy day but we still saw some nice views overlooking the city from the top of the castle. For those visiting with little ones, I would suggest foregoing the stroller because it would have been very challenging to navigate all the cobblestones and steps.

We took it easy for the rest of the day and our flight home to Toronto the following day was largely uneventful. Now that we are back at home, it’s time to start thinking of ideas for our next family trip! Maybe Scandinavia?

  2. Beautiful! Alas, I only saw Edinburgh Castle from the outside during my visit years ago, as I didn’t have time to go in and explore. Looks lovely, though! Thanks for sharing your visit to the UK this time around– I definitely recommend Scandinavia next! Perhaps Denmark, Sweden, or Norway?

    1. I saw your Instagram posts about Denmark and Faroe Islands – that trip looked amazing! Did you go with a tour to Faroe Islands or plan that yourself? I definitely want to go to Copenhagen and thinking about combining it with Norway to visit a friend.

      1. My partner and I visited Copenhagen on our own, but we opted for a 3-day packaged tour of the Faroe Islands, which was worth it for our short stay. I went with “Guide to Faroe Islands” (https://guidetofaroeislands.fo/), and while I’ll say that it’s quite hike-heavy depending on what you choose, there are a few more-chill day tours to choose from. Have fun, wherever you go next!

  3. I’m impressed you can wait until a trip is finished before starting to think of a new trip. I’m usually thinking 5-6 trips ahead!

    1. I have a vague bucket list in my head but I’ve stuck to planning in detail only 1-2 trips ahead. Even so, my husband teases me about being an excessive planner.
