Sushi, Central Park, and more pizza in New York City

After arriving in NYC the previous afternoon and starting off our pizza tour, we awoke the next morning to begin our first full day in the city.

We spent a leisurely morning in the hotel. Teddy usually wakes up at around 6:30 am so we fed him and played a bit while eating a takeout bagel and lox from Ess-a-Bagel.

We headed out on the subway around lunchtime to the Upper East Side for our highly anticipated meal at Tanoshi Sushi. This was our favourite spot the last time we visited NYC and we had been dreaming about a return trip for years. This time around, we went for the shorter lunch omakase since we were afraid the dinner would be too long for Teddy to handle and it would also be past his bedtime. Lunch was an efficient 45 minute meal and Teddy actually napped through the entire thing in his stroller. We probably could have requested the dinner omakase menu but the lunch menu was a decent amount of food.

Sufficiently satiated by our delicious sushi lunch, we walked over to Central Park. Originally, I was thinking of checking out the zoo or carousel for Teddy but he stayed sound asleep so we just enjoyed a walk for us grown-ups.

We managed to walk for about an hour before Mr. Chuckles’ swollen toe put him out of commission so we returned to the hotel for some relaxation time.

In the evening, we ventured back out to Greenwich Village for the second stop on our NYC pizza tour. This time we went for a dine-in meal at John’s of Bleeker which serves whole pies rather than slices.

This turned out to be Teddy’s favourite experience from the trip. It was his first time sitting in a high chair at a restaurant and he was absolutely enthralled by the sight of all the people around us, even making friends with the dad and teen daughter at the table behind us.

Unfortunately he did have a mini meltdown on the walk back to the hotel. I made the rookie mistake of not packing any snacks or an extra bottle of milk because he had eaten before we left the hotel. Lesson learned – always have snacks or milk at the ready when travelling with a baby!

Otherwise I would count this as a successful day out. Next up, Chinatown and more pizza.

  2. great to see your posts again! Glad to see your trip to NYC was successful, it made me realize how much I missed the city.

I realized I neglected my blog and trying to do a catchup. I am headed to Brooklyn next month and am excited to do something different in NYC. I plan on making a trip or two to Manhattan when I am there.

    take care.

  3. Another lovely day out in NYC! Teddy sounds like a well-behaved child (at least, for the most part until the end, haha). A solid food day out, from bagels to sushi to a classic NY-slice pizza! Can’t wait to read more from you. 🙂

  4. I enjoyed my time in NYC over a decade ago, but it’s never been super high on my list of “must return to” destinations, except for . . . PIZZA. (5-min pause) You’ve sent me down a NY pizza search rabbit hole, and I’ve found some not too far away. Thanks, Jess!
