Exploring the beaches of San Sebastián, Spain

We awoke on an overcast April morning to begin our first full day in San Sebastián. Our plan was to take a walk around town and explore the beautiful beaches.

Heading toward Old Town, our first stop before our beach exploration was breakfast at Churreria Santa Lucía, where I enjoyed my first of many churros with hot chocolate. Yes, this was as delicious as it looks!

Then we walked through Alderdi Eder park and onward to Playa de la Concha. Located at the Bay of La Concha, this crescent shaped beach is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful and famous urban beaches in Europe.

We continued our walk along the waterfront, occasionally stopping to watch some surfers brave the waves.

We wrapped up our walk at Miramar Jauregia, where we found the late 19th century palace that was commissioned by the Spanish royal family to serve as a summer home for the Queen. It now hosts summer courses by the University of the Basque Country and the palace gardens are open to the public.

After this excursion, we decided to return to our hotel for a lazy afternoon. In the evening, we made reservations at Restaurante Narru located at our hotel and enjoyed a delectable dinner of modern Basque cuisine.

You may have noticed that this trip recap comes quite belated. As an update, I have now officially become a mother. 😳 I’m looking at applying for baby’s passport soon so hopefully 2024 will be the year of family travel!

More recaps of our pre-baby Spain and France trip to come.

  2. Welcome back! I figured the pause in blogging was due to having your baby– congratulations! Hope to see your travels amped up in 2024 with your kid! I was last in San Sebastian four years ago, but in the summer: it’s interesting to read your adventures there in the spring, which looks quite cool in weather, as opposed to the hot weather I experienced back then! The pintxos in town were some of the best I had in Spain, and I’m glad you had a wonderful time! Looking forward to seeing what’s in store for you on your future travels 🙂
