Muir Woods National Monument, California

Following our day exploring Golden Gate Park and the Sunset district, we ventured across the Golden Gate Bridge to visit Muir Woods.

The Muir Woods National Monument is part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area, located 12 miles north of San Francisco. It protects 554 acres of land, about half of which is made of old growth coast redwood forest. It is about a 45 minute drive from downtown San Francisco and pre-purchased parking reservations are required.

We arrived to a light drizzle but fortunately the rain quickly settled. The main trail is a well maintained boardwalk so we were able to bring the stroller, but I ended up taking Teddy out and putting him in the carrier. He seemed to enjoy the walk and was intrigued by the impressive trees that stand up to over 250 feet tall.

We spent about an hour on the short loop and then headed back to the city. We had been planning to make a trip over to Livermore to spend some more time with the family but Mr. Chuckles was feeling crummy so we just spent the afternoon back at our hotel so he could have a long nap. Teddy and I played around taking selfie videos and practising his new skill – crawling!

The next day we would be departing San Francisco for a trip down the coast to Monterey for Teddy’s first road trip.

  2. I’ve never crossed the Golden Gate, although I’ve been to Berkeley on the other side of the bay. I can’t remember the rationality of my choices, but reading your article on Muir Woods, I agree that there are some nice places to visit there.

  3. Never been to Muir Woods, but it looks so lovely! All the tall, imposing, yet historic trees that make you feel small and insignificant in this big, beautiful world…glad you had a wonderful time exploring the nature of northern California as a brief break from the city!
