See more from my On This Day series here, where I celebrate travel memories on their trip anniversaries.
On December 7, 2017, I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
It was our penultimate day in New York City and we decided to cap off our time in the big city with a visit to one of its top landmarks — the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met).
Founded in 1870 to bring art education to the American public, the Met is the largest art museum in the United States and the fourth most visited in the world. Its permanent collection of over 2 million works divided among 17 curatorial departments draws an average of 6.5 million visitors annually to its three locations.
The main building at 1000 Fifth Avenue contains the bulk of the museum’s artifacts, with smaller secondary collections housed at The Cloisters at Fort Tryon Park and the Met Breuer on Madison Avenue.
The permanent collection includes works dating from classical antiquity and ancient Egypt, sculptures from nearly all the European masters, and pieces of American and modern art. Visitors can also explore an encyclopedic collection of musical instruments, costumes, antique weapons and armour, as well as several notable interiors.
The Met is worth a visit whenever you are in New York City. In fact, I was there in both 2016 and 2017, and the photos below are a combination taken from both trips.

The Met is the perfect place to take a trip around the world, going back in time to see all the beautiful things that have been produced.

The friend I was traveling to NYC with in 2016 had absolutely no interest in going here so I missed it when I was there. Definitely on my must-visit list next time! Glad you’ve enjoyed both visits ๐

For sure, it should be on the list for at least a brief visit if you’re ever back in NYC!

I have to admit that I also failed to check out The Met on my visits to NYC. If I were to go again one day, I’d definitely make a point of stopping by.

Yes, I think it’s a must-see at least once. An iconic part of NYC.

Isn’t it sad that I can’t remember if we went here? Good thing I kept a journal – I’ll have to go back and look. We were only in NYC for four days and there was so much to see. Museums can take up so much time if you do them thoroughly and give them the justice they deserve.

Yup, between all the museums and the eating, my itinerary in NYC was jam packed!
