As of this week, our province is officially in its second lockdown. Indoor dining has been restricted again, so we are back to curbside pickup and delivery. Earlier in the spring, I published a post on a few of our favourite takeout meals, and it’s now time for an update with new additions. I actually ended up editing that original post to omit a certain barbecue restaurant that has made the news in the past 24 hours, as it has turned into the home base for whacky Covid conspiracy theorists and hateful protestors. We will no longer be giving that place our business — but no matter, there are many other great local restaurants to support in its place!
📍 116 Atlantic Ave, Toronto, ON M6K 1X9 (Pick-up only)
If 2020 is the year of coronavirus in the world of medicine, it’s the year of the smash burger in the culinary world. Burger Drops is one of the originators of the smash burger in Toronto, specializing in burgers prepared by pressing the patty onto a flat skillet while cooking, making them extra thin with a fine crust at the edges. The simple but flavourful burgers are topped with their signature jalapeño relish, which is also great on top of the cheese fries.
📍 797 College St, Toronto, ON M6G 1C7 (Patio, pick-up, or delivery)
The recipe for gâteau basque that I shared on this blog last year was inspired by the staple dessert at Bar Isabel, which we were delighted to discover is now available for delivery. This cozy restaurant serves Spanish-inspired creative plates, wine, and craft beers. Beyond dessert, some of my favourite savoury choices here include the shishito peppers, pan con tomate, and patatas bravas. The roasted bone marrow is also one of the best in the city, although unavailable on the current pared down menu.
📍 872 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1G3 (Pick-up or delivery)
We were hesitant about ordering fresh oysters for delivery, but we did this recently from Oyster Boy in the Queen West neighbourhood and were pleased with how they carried. This place has a sizable selection of oysters that can be delivered whole or pre-shucked. Their other seafood menu items are also good, including the lobster bisque and fried oyster rolls.
📍 280 Spadina Ave, Toronto, ON M5T 0A1 (Pick-up or delivery)
Juicy Dumpling is our go-to for xiao long bao Shanghai soup dumplings. The green onion fried pancakes are a nice side, and there are several other dumpling options too. For dessert, I go with the miniature sesame balls. Another bonus is the super reasonable prices; a perfect cheap eat.
📍 923a Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1G5 (Pick up only)
Wrapping up this list is another smash burger joint, Matty’s Patty’s Burger Club, which opened very recently near our neighbourhood. Helmed by CANADIAN LEGEND chef Matty Matheson, Matty’s makes a serious double patty smash cheeseburger topped with a big dollop of their signature sauces. I prefer Burger Drops a bit more, but this place is worth a stop when in the area.
